Wgtn Polytech, top apprentices

PA Wellington A former public servant who decided she did not want to spend the rest of her life behind a desk has won the Wellington Polytechnic award for top apprentice. Ms Alison Lash, aged 38, of Wellington, won $2OO as top carpentry apprentice and another $6OO as best apprentice. Ms Lash said she decided four years ago she wanted a more active job in which she could have control over her own income. She chose carpentry. Ms Lash topped her Trade Certificate carpentry examination at Wellington Polytechnic last year and has six months to go to complete her apprenticeship. She works for a building firm which specialises in domestic renovations. Eventually, she would like to set up in business with others, she said. Other apprentice award winners were: Mark Duncan, Wellington, automotive engineering; Peter Joyce, Wellington, electrical; Tony Francis, Wellington, fitting and turning; Andrew Beauchamp, Wellington, painting and decorating; Shane Eagar, Porirua, panel-beating; Wayne Eustace, New Plymouth, plumbing and gasfitting; and Dean Lovich, Auckland, sign writing.
