By

DAVE WILSON

More than 800 would-be aviators have applied for “The Press” Flying Scholarship being run in conjunction with the Canterbury Aero Club. Entries officially close on Friday and flight evaluations for the first batch of entrants will be made next week.

The scholarship winner will receive flying instruction to private pilot licence standard, valued at $5OOO. The prize for the runner-up is $l5OO of flying, to first solo flight standard. Mr Chris Bell, the manager of the Canterbury Aero Club, said there had been an excellent

response to “The Press” Flying Scholarship, and entries could reach 1000 by Friday. The official entry form has been printed regularly in “The Press,” and was printed for the last time yesterday. Mr Bell said the flight evaluation tests of all scholarship entrants were expected to be completed within six weeks and a winner known by the end of June or in early July. “The timetable will depend on the weather, which dictates flying schedules.” The scholarship is open to people aged 16 years and over living in “The Press” circulation area.
