Water supply battler dies

PA Blenheim The Marlborough water supply campaigner, Mr Dave McFarlane, died on Tuesday morning, the day he was to appear in the Small Claims Court seeking costs from local authorities who had previously denied him water. Mr McFarlane, aged 68, battled for 11 years to have.a connection to the Marlborough County Council’s Burleigh water scheme. The County Council bought its water from the Blenheim Borough Council which ruled that no further water connections could be added. Others in the area were already connected but when Mr McFarlane applied in 1974 both authorities stuck to their agreement of no new connections.

Not taking no for an answer, Mr McFarlane sought and gained help from the Ombudsman, the media, the “Fair Go” television programme, and various courts.

He finally won his crusade for a connection in November, 1985, but since then has been battling to recover costs from the two local authorities.
