WELCOME to the OPENING THE GUTHREY CENTRE

Car parks important

Nowhere is the importance of innercity car parking better displayed than at the Guthrey Centre. The redevelopment of the centre has been closely associated with the supply of car parks in the adjacent Lichfield Car Parking Building. The first stage of this building was completed in 1966, with extra decks added later. A new extension was completed last year on land owned by Ballantynes and Guthrey Holdings. In total, it contains 860 parking spaces and is one of the largest public car park buildings in New Zealand. The development of the Guthrey Centre and the Lichfield Car Park Building has been a partnership between the developers and the council. It is a partnership that is working well. Mr Peter Guthrey, the managing director of Guthrey Holdings, said that

if adequate parking spaces are not provided then shoppers will go to the suburbs where free car parking is available. “You have to make it as easy as possible for them. One of the great advantages of this centre is that everything is under one roof and people are not put off by weather conditions. “Because of the importance of car parking we have always lobbied extremely hard to make sure there are plenty of spaces available. “With the proximity to Shades, Baliantynes and the City Mall, the Lichfield car park is extremely important and generates much foot traffic through the Guthrey Centre. “With the final development due for completion within two years we will be looking for even more car parking space,” said Mr Guthrey.
