Parent peer groups

Sir, —The article by Deborah McPherson (April 22) about school counsellors mentions concerned parents and the peer pressure of teenagers, amongst other things. I would like to say that parents who are concerned about drug and alcohol abuse can do something positive. They can form P.P.G.S (parent peer groups). These are groups of parents who look at the parenting concerns that confront them, then form guidelines and a telephone communication network. They are also kept up to date through P.R.Y.D.E. (Parents Reaching Youth through Drug Education), with the latest scien--tific information about mindaltering chemicals. Many of the high schools in Christchurch have P.P.G.s, including the two schools mentioned in the article. P.P.G.S are mostly in third and fourth forms as these are the easiest levels to introduce them. If parents want any more information they can telephone Vesta Boswell, the South Island co-ordinator for P.R.Y.D.E. (03-287-309). — Yours, etc., ALISON CHAMBERS. April 24, 1989.
