Rush wants to swim Tasman
NZPA Brisbane A 25-year-old New Zealander who boasts five English Channel records wants to become the first person to swim the Tasman Sea, a distance of 1900 km.
Philip Rush, one of two swimmers to complete a threeway crossing of the English Channel, hopes to launch his Tasman assault next year. His Australian agent, Mr Peter Thomson, said yesterday the Wellington-based marathon swimmer hoped to swim about 32km a day, sleeping aboard a support vessel and following a “three days on, one day off” routine. Mr Thomson said the swim could take up to 3>/ 2 months to complete and, if successful, would be the longest ocean swim on record.
According to the “Guinness Book of Records,” the longest recorded ocean swim is 207 km by an American a decade ago.
Mr Thomson said Rush would attempt swims of Moreton Bay, off Brisbane, and Sydney Harbour, as part of his preparation for the Tasman swim.
