Wgtn weather delays flights

The closing of Wellington Airport by low cloud for eight hours yesterday disrupted about 12 Ansett New Zealand flights in Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington. The public relations manager for Ansett, Mr Brian Lockstone, said about 300 travellers’ plans were disrupted by the closed airport. A spokesman for Air New Zealand said three of its flights were disrupted — two were redirected mid-flight to Palmerston North and the third wascancelled.

Many of the passengers were then taken by coach to Wellington. The airport was reopened as “marginal” later in the day. Ansett put on extra flights last evening to clear the backlog of passengers delayed in Christchurch and Auckland.
