Car hits tree in orchard chase
PA Auckland Two men will appear in the North Shore District Court today after a chase for a stolen car ended abruptly in an apple orchard. The vehicle hit' a tree after it had been chased between rows of apple trees by a police car. The chase began when a car was stolen from a Glenfield service station about 12.30 a.m. on Saturday.
The car’s owner left the engine running while he went to buy cigarettes.
One of two men in a nearby car hopped into the vehicle and drove off. As he did so, the owner walked on to the station’s forecourt and tried to block the escape route. He was side-swiped as he jumped clear of the accelerating car and suffered grazes and bruising to his legs. A police patrol spotted the stolen car a short time later and the chase went off-road when the vehicle turned, into an orchard.
The pursuit continued between rows of apple trees for some time until the stolen car hit a tree and stopped.
