Forest and Bird head

PA Wellington The Royal Forest and Bird Society will have a new conservation director from July 1. Mr Kevin Smith, the present South Island conservation officer and scientist with experience in wetland and wildlife conservation, will replace Dr Gerry McSweeney who was conservation director since 1983.

Dr McSweeney is leaving to start a nature tourism business at Lake Moeraki in South Westland.

The society’s president, Mr Alan Mark, said in the 6>/ 2 years under Dr McSweeney’s directorship society membership had doubled to 53,000.
