Souths, Brisbane lead league
South Sydney and Brisbane retained their co-leadership of the New South Wales rugby league premiership yesterday.
While Brisbane was comfortably accounting for North Sydney, 36-10, at North Sydney Oval, Souths was engaged in a tight contest with the defending champion, Canter-bury-Bankstown, at Belmore Sports Grounds. After trailing 0-2 at the interval, Souths went ahead when Wayne Chisholm scored soon after the resumption and clinched a 10-2 victory thanks to a late try to Ross Harrington. They are two competition points ahead of Canberra and Penrith, which both had decisive wins during the weekend. Canberra humbled St George and Penrith dominated Balmain.
Newcastle kept up its promising challenge by beat-
ing Parramatta, 10-6, at Parramatta Stadium. Michael Hagan consigned Parramatta to its third successive loss with his try just before fulltime.
