Horticultural Society in throes of major growth

The Canterbury Horticultural Society, (Inc), has experienced a major surge in membership in recent months, averaging 50 new members a month since December. It appears that the efforts of Society staff to establish what the public are looking for, and what they expect from the society, are paying dividends. At Shows, short lectures and demonstrations on a wide range of horticultural topics are proving extremely popular. Each

Show features attractive and topical exhibits, which Canterbury folk of all ages appreciate. The improved format and content of the newsletters and journals informs members of the diversity of the Society’s activities — ranging from pruning demonstrations, lawn care, landscaping, floral art workshops and demonstrations to bus tours. Recent bus tours have included visits to the city’s prize winning gardens, and a most successful “Wine Trail” to North

Canterbury. Trips planned for the next few months include a day trip on the Tranz-Alpine Express to Arthur’s Pass, a bus trip to view the outstanding gardens in the Governors Bay area and to South Canterbury to see the Craigmore Peony Nursery and Mr Griffiths’ Old Roses in Temuka. The Social Committee is planning an exciting Spring Tour to Taranaki to see some of the world renowned rhododendron gardens and many other attractions of this unique area.

Members are eagerly awaiting the opening of the new Horticultural Centre in South Hagley Park. The extensive renovations are scheduled to be completed by Ist September. Besides being an ideal place for holding its many flower shows, the Centre will be an excellent meeting place for different horticultural groups, and it will be a venue where members can come to meet their horticultural friends.

The society looks forward to the future with confidence with the assurance that the garden city image of Christchurch can be enhanced by the continuing assistance of the Canterbury Horticultural Society.
