Alzheimer’s disease
Sir,—The concern of the New Zealand Pure Water Association (April 20) concerning the leaching of aluminium from cooking utensils by fluoridised water and the subsequent possible link with Alzheimer’s disease is easily put to rest. The results of the two Sri Lankan scientists published in January, 1987, were immediately fully checked at an American medical centre by three scientists who carried out several experiments which supported the view that the presence of fluoride in water has no noticeable effect on the leaching of aluminium. The Sri Lankan scientists then retracted their claim that fluoridised water at the usual fluoride level of 1 p.p.m. could enhance leaching, stating "... we have re-examined our experiments and discovered that our aluminium estimates were in error.”—Yours, etc., C. N. HOOKER. 5 April 20, 1989.
