Drainage rates stay the same

The Christchurch Drainage Board, at its final budget meeting before amalgamation, decided not to increase rates for the coming financial year. The decision will mean the absorption of a $430,000 increase in GST imposed by the Government from July. Ron Wilton, the chairman of the board’s

estimates sub-committee, said minimal wage rises, low maintenance costs and a reduction in debt servicing had kept expenditure down. Accounts released at the meeting showed the board had a surplus last year of $2.2 million. Mr Wilton said ratepayers would get the benefits from the surplus in the coming year.
