‘All bar one’ to follow Anderton

By

KAY FORRESTER

A Labour Party source predicts that all bar one of the. Sydenham electorate committee will resign in support of their member of Parliament, Mr Jim Anderton, next Monday. The one is Mrs Ruby Fowler, Sydenham branch chairman and a Christchurch City councillor. Mrs Fowler was adamant yesterday afternoon that she would not resign from the committee or the party. . “I’m on the committee representing my branch. I’m not leaving. Why should I?” she said. Mrs Fowler was called to last evening’s electorate committee meeting where members debated her stand and a meeting she called on Monday evening of the executive of her branch. After the meeting she had no comment to make — “I’ve been gagged.” Mrs Fowler does not believe that she will be the only one left on the electorate committee after next Monday’s public meeting. The electorate committee chairman, Mr Tim Arthur, plans to announce the resignations at the end of that meeting. Mrs Fowler said she would not be at Monday’s meeting.

Mr Arthur said last evening that Mrs Fowler had made it clear at last evening’s meeting that she would not resign. The electorate committee members had agreed that only he, as chairman, would make any comment until Monday’s meeting. Of last Monday’s meeting, Mrs Fowler said it was simply a

regular branch executive meet- . ing with the date changed because it had been set for May 1, the day Mr Anderton has scheduled his public meeting in the electorate. Mr Arthur said the meeting called by Mrs Fowler of her Sydenham branch committee had intended to pass a vote of support for the Government. He said branch members that Mrs Fowler did not invite were upset to read about the meeting and its intention in the newspaper. These uninvited members turned up at the meeting. Mr Arthur said the vote of confidence in the Government was never put. Monday’s meeting is to give Mr Anderton a chance to explain to the electorate his resignation from the party. He attended last evening’s meeting as an invited guest and was present for most of the debate. He was buoyed by the announcement at the meeting of two further resignations from the party’s hierarchy.
