Former Mayor leaves Labour

PA Wellington The former Mayor of Mt Eden, Auckland, Ms Philippa Cunningham, is the latest Labour Party member to defect to Mr Jim Anderton’s New Labour Party. Ms Cunningham, who has been in the Labour Party since 1980, a chairwoman of a branch and Mt Eden Mayor from 1983 to 1986, said yesterday that she would now

channel her energies into creating “a real alternative political party for Nev; Zealanders.” She said the Parliamentary Labour Party no longer represented the views of the Labour Party nor the people it represented. “I have been saddened to watch the course of this Government since its election in 1984. Many of the changes over the last

five years have constituted a destruction of the New Zealand way of life as we know it. “Moreover the Labour members of Parliament seem to lack compassion for and interest in the folk who have suffered as a result of their policies.” Mr Anderton’s new party gave “a ray of hope.”
