Trackwork

Awapuni Special correspondent Palmerston North Margaret Bull holds a strong hand in the first leg of the double at the Waipukurau races at Hastings on Saturday with Travertine and Soubrette and both galloped attractively in separate trials at Awapuni yesterday. Soubrette was never in contention at Otaki but was not ridden to instructions. Noel Harris will be aboard this time and the grey could go close to winning. Soubrette worked a couple of rounds before sprinting her last 600 metres on the plough in 36.4. It was a top effort for a stayer and Harris should get the best out of her at Hastings. Travertine, racing well was no less impressive as she bowled along over 1000 metres in 1:5, the last 600 m in 38. Peter Ayres rides her this week and could go close to giving Bull the quinella in the race.

Zelazny is another at Waipukurau and he has not looked back since his Nelson trip when he won on the first day. He worked well with recent trials winner, Javatan, over 1200 metres in 1:23, the last 600 in 40.

Lucca and Sesame Street were timed from the 800 metres in 52.4, the last 600 in 38.4. Red Spit, making a fresh start on Friday, ran from the 800 in 53, the last 600 in 39. Red Spit needs rain but has come up looking in good order.

Aaron, a bright maiden prospect on Friday, ran the last 600 of his work in 39.4. He has been racing well but a

soft track kept him at home from Otaki last week. Jesterman, which has been disappointing of late, worked over 1200 metres with Windward Beat, running the journey in 1:23, the last 600 in 40. Spirit Of Charm ran from the 600 in 42. Noel Eales galloped two of his Wanganui candidates and

both were impressive. First Rullah, which ran a good race at Otaki on a track he was not all that happy on, ran 1000 metres in fine style, recording 1:3.4, the last 600 in 39.4. Golden Elm, a likely maiden prospect, was timed 800 metres in 52.4, the last 600 in 39.4.
