Fine upheld

PA Wellington A $350 fine imposed on a man whose sheep were badly affected by flystrike has been upheld in the High Court. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals appealed the penalty imposed on John Irvine Brown on the ground that it was manifestly inadequate. The fine was to be paid to the S.P.C.A. and Brown was also ordered to pay veterinary fees of $l5O and court costs of $65. Mr Justice Heron dismissed the society’s appeal against the sentence.

The Court was told Brown had a small hobby farm at Judgeford. Some sheep on the farm were badly affected by flystrike; some sheep died.
