Housing Corp, loans to 11,308
PA Wellington The Housing Corporation approved 11,308 mortgages to people on low or modest incomes last year, the Minister of Housing, Ms Clark said. Another 2321 households had loans refinanced, Ms Clark said in an address at a ceremony to mark the redevelopment of the corporation’s Napier office. A total of 16,379 households were helped with Homestart loans, which help people raise a deposit on buying a home. About 25 per cent of all home mortgages in the December quarter of the last financial year were provided by the Housing Corporation. The average corporation interest rate in December was 11.4 per cent, compared with the average private sector rate of 15.7 per cent. Housing Corporation rents, averaging $6B, were also much lower than the average private sector rental of $154. A total of 9678 rental units were allocated in the last financial year, up from 7939 in the previous year, Ms Clark said.
