Country experience

A holiday programme called “A Country Experience” is being run for city children aged eight to 12 years at the Boys’ Brigade Waipara campsite. Young people can choose to take part in either a four day residential camp from May 9 to May 12, or go on day trips from Christchurch to the campsite. Activities will include abseiling, orienteering, farm visits, mini golf, tramps and outdoor cooking.

In recent years the campsite facilities have been enlarged, and improved and they now include a large hall, bunk rooms, dining room and a training and conference centre. The grounds have a large recreational area, and sheltered area for camping. During the first week of the May school holidays, a leadership course is being run for senior Boys’ Brigade youths. The Young Men’s Christian Association is offering 15 holiday programmes next month, with activities including ice skating, visits to Quail Island, boating on the Avon River and visiting the animals at the S.P.C.A.

There are programmes based in various centres around the Christchurch, suburbs, mostly catering for eight to 12-year-olds. Special Tiny-Y programmes for five to eight-year-olds will operate during the two weeks. All the activities offered are fun and action-packed and each programme has its own flavour. The Y.M.C.A. is running a three-day basketball camp at its city stadium, for keen basketbailers aged 10 to 13 years, who want some training. It begins on May 8 and ends on May 10. Two camps are being offered at Wainui for children aged eight to 14 years. There will be a tramp over the Harpers Pass for keen hikers. Holiday volunteers The Y.M.C.A. is looking for volunteers to help with all its holiday programmes. Anyone 16 years old or more, who is interested in spending a week working with children, should contact the Y.M.C.A. Training will be provided. Venturers A Venturer achievement camp is being held at Blue Skies in Kaiapoi next month. The camp is held annually to help venturers meet the requirements needed for their Queen Scout Award, the highest award a scouter can receive. On May 20, young people who have attained the award during the last 12 months will be presented with it by the Governor General, Sir Paul Reeves.
