Focus on dishwashers

Dishwashers have come of age and are now an essential part of the modem kitchen, eliminating dishwashing drudgery. A product ignored in the past, dishwashers have been transformed by technology, says Mr Paul Anticich, the sales director for Kitchen Appliance Specialists. The latest local and overseas models are being displayed at the store’s Dishwasher and Laundry Expo ■ this week. Five brands, Asea, A.E.G., Smeg, Shacklock and Simpson are being demonstrated along with four brands of washing machine — Simpson, Asea, Hoover and A.E.G. — and waste disposers. Modern dishwashers can be integrated to match kitchen joinery, built-in or freestanding. Their performance and noise level have transformed them almost beyond recognition. The noise level has been cut by 50 per cent to

slightly more than 40 decibels, little more noise than a refrigerator makes. With touch button controls and settings offering a choice of up to 18 wash programmes, dishwashers can wash anything from the most delicate glassware to the grimiest pots and pans. Contrary to popular belief, dishwashers offer considerable energy savings. Plumbed to the cold water supply, the appliance heats the water, saving on water heating costs and also installation costs. As well, a dishwasher uses far less water to wash one day’s dishes than even three sink loads. A total wash for a 14-place setting uses as little as 15 litres of water. Eighty litres of water per minute are thrown over the dishes by the action of the appliance. Gone are the days of dirty dishes lying on the bench. Dirty dishes can go straight into the dishwasher from the table

without even being rinsed. A quick pre-rinse will stop stubborn cereal remains from drying on to the dishes. Safety features such as up to three anti-flood devices eliminate such domestic disasters. Some models are made to last up to 20-25 years. The very high quality of stainless steel used in their construction gives them a greater guarantee against rust than a car carries. It is even possible to buy a small dishwasher (Asea) which can sit on a bench, occupying no more space than a microwave — ideal for small kitchens. Kitchen Appliance Specialists offers a complete installation service if required — plumbing, electrical and joinery if alterations to the kitchen are needed. Everyone who buys a dishwasher during Dishwasher and Laundry Expo will receive free a

high quality white porcelain dinnerset valued at $lOO and six months supply of detergent and rinse aid. New technology offers fresh options in washing machines. Front loading models make efficient use of space in the laundry. A washing machine and dryer can be built under a bench or stacked to give a true multi-purpose attractive laundry. Colour options to match the room are available.

Winners

The winner of the first week’s Expo was Mr P. de Gouw, of Burwood. He received $lOOO worth of German appliances. The ignominious title of “Worst Cook in Christchurch” went to Tracey Halfall, of Shirley. She won $lOOO worth of appliances of her choice from Kitchen Appliance Specialists.
