Timing questioned
Wellington reporter The No Frigates Campaign has welcomed the proposal to formally withdraw from A.N.Z.U.S., but expressed caution over its timing. Mr Lange’s announcement was a positive move towards an independent foreign policy, but to win public backing the Government must match its words with actions, said a campaign spokesman, Mr Nicky Hager. Mr Hager questioned why Mr Lange’s announcement — which could only formalise the status quo — was made a few weeks before a Government decision on the Anzac frigates. “Withdrawing from the A.N.Z.U.S. Council will only mean something if the Government gives effect to the policy through actions like not buying new frigates,” he said.
