Expelled priest ‘unsure’

A New Zealand priest, Father Tom Rouse, arrived in Sydney yesterday unsure why he had been expelled from Fiji after 12 years work with the Catholic Church there. Father Rouse had been one of 18 people arrested during a prayer vigil in Suva on May 14 last year to mark the first anniversary of Fiji’s military coup. But they were subsequently acquitted
after a six-month court case. Father Rouse said in Sydney that he did not necessarily attribute his expulsion to that incident. Fijian authorities refused to renew Father Rouse’s work permit when it expired in February and an appeal to Major-General Sitiveni Rabuka, Minister of Home Affairs, was refused last week. Father Rouse is a missionary with the Columban Order whose work with the poor frequently leads to conflict with authoritarian regimes.
