Ice team take dip

All 12 members of the Scott Base winter-over team, and 36 of their fellows from the American McMurdo Base, have marked the start of winter with a swim through a hole cut in the 45cm thick sea ice of McMurdo Sound. The swim, on Sunday,

was the final event of a week-end of activities marking the final sunset of the season. It took place at an air temperature of —34 deg. and a water temperature of —2 deg. The wintering teams will not see the sun rise again until spring.
