Rangers out of Chatham Cup contest
The southern league division one leader, Christchurch Rangers, was bundled out of the Chatham Cup soccer competition when it lost 3-1 to the division two side, South Canterbury, in Timaru yesterday. South Canterbury, relegated from division one last year, was not the only division two side to cause a surprise. Woolston W.M.C., coached by the former All White, Bobby Almond, upset the high flying division one team, Christchurch Technical, 5-4, on penalties at Ensors Road in their first round clash. The match was tied, 0-0, after extra-time. Almond said Technical was unlucky not to score several times and was full of praise for his young goalkeeper, Craig Lauchlan, who made some fine saves. "The gods were smiling on us today. We didn’t have a lot of luck in the league in the last three weeks but it came right today." Woolston has been hit by injuries this season and the victory was a boost for the team’s confidence. “It is always good to do well in the Cup. You get a bit of recognition and I am really pleased for the young players in the squad. They endured a lot of pressure and came up trumps.” The second division leader, New Brighton, also went close to an upset, being beaten, 10-9, on penalties by first division Western after the scores had been locked at 2-2 after extratime. In the Otago-Southland competition two first division sides went out at the first hurdle. Mosgiel was beaten, 5-1, by fellow first division side Green Island while Caversham was beaten, 2-1, by Grants Braes of the second division. The draw for the second round will be made this Saturday. The national league champion, Christchurch United, will come into the competition, with second round matches scheduled for May 20.
