Defence plans energy cuts

PA Wellington The Defence Department hoped to prune $1 million off its $12.3 million annual energy budget, said the Secretary of Defence, Dr Basil Walker. Dr Walker said he wanted the department to become a pathfinder among Government departments in efficient energy use. “In the particular cir-

cumstances facing Defence, with the $l4OO million cap on the vote, measures such as energy management could make an appreciable difference in the resources we can apply to military tasks.” Dr Walker, opening a two-day energy management seminar for defence personnel at Trentham Camp on Thursday, said the targeted million-dollar saving, with others, would make a big difference.

Money on energy was spent on 18 installations throughout the country but a small number of large bases accounted for a large proportion of defence energy costs. The seminar is being conducted by the president of the American Pacific Energy Institution, Mr Perry Lovelace, who is a specialist in the design of energy efficient systems.
