Antarctic tourism ‘challenge’

Antarctica could provide tourism with great challenges said the general manager of the New Zealand Tourst and Publicity Department, Mr Neil Plimmer.

He told delegates at the annual conference of the Pacific Asia Travel Association at Singapore: “There is no doubt about its inherent tourism appeal. It is scenically stunning and anyone who doesn’t get excited about having a picnic with penguins is very hard v to please. “For tourism, there are great challenges in the severe climate and the danger that goes with it, and in the environment impact issues. “Yet tourism even now is developing as the lure of this isolated place captures the imagination of adventurous travellers. “We must look at a careful and long-term approach to the development of Antarctic tourism with as much interest in ensuring that it is well and beneficially managed from a conservation point of view as in deriving economic benefit,” said Mr Plimmer.
