Longburn picket ends
Meatworkers have called off their picket at the Longburn freezing works after a vigil of more than a month. “We’ve achieved what we set out to do. We’ve raised public awareness,” said the vice-president of the West Coast Meatworkers’ Union, Mr Paul Wintringham, yesterday. Meatworkers began picketing the works early last month in protest against Waitaki International’s decision to lease freezer space to Wattle’s. A long-tunning industrial dispute has kept the works closed for more than two years. However, trucks carrying frozen foods have repeatedly broken the picket line and entered the works to unload their cargo.—PA.
