‘Pop,’ 93, in march

Mr Eric George Rouse practised for a couple of weeks for his role in the Kaiapoi Anzac Day parade. He was determined to march three-quarters of a mile ("whatever that is in kilometres”), lay a wreath on behalf of World War I veterans and enjoy a little socialising at the end. He did, too, with his walking stick tapping rhythmically to the beat of the Kaiapoi Brass Band’s "Invercargill” and. "Sussex by the Sea.” But there was a touch of disappointment when he joined the marchers at the community centre. Someone had forgotten that he took “a glass of brandy now and then.” Eric ("call me Pop”) will be 93 in October.
