Arts Centre
Sir, —I note some correspondence commenting on the location of the arts and crafts market. I would like to arrest any misunderstandings your correspondents may have. Recognising the urgency needed for landscaping, the Trust Board engaged a firm of landscape architects to develop a proposal that would maximise appeal and utility of the whole city block. Submissions were invited from a wide cross-section of public interest groups, including market stallholders, and these form the basis of the proposal. Contrary to the suggestion that the market is being “pushed” into a car-park, the proposal provides for a major investment in the market surrounds, incorporating a pur-pose-built market square at the eastern end. The quadrangles will provide a much-needed forum for outdoor theatre, special events and entertainments and other passive pursuits. There is no reason in the proposal why the market should lose its unique arts and crafts flavour or reputation for quality. — Yours, etc., G. N. ELLIS, Director, The Arts Centre of Christchurch Trust. April 22, 1989.
