Teachers’ union to swell
PA Wellington Membership of the primary teachers’ union will increase several thousand next term after the New Zealand Educational Institute’s national March ballot on compulsory membership. Preliminary vote counts indicated members and non-members have voted “overwhelmingly” for compulsory membership, N.Z.E.I. secretary, Rosslyn Noonan, said. Big changes in education meant teachers were uncertain of the future, which could be why the result was so strong, she said.
Votes are being recounted by the Labour Court registrar. Exact percentages should be available to members in a few weeks.
