Solo Alps traverse
PA Nelson The first solo traverse of the Southern Alps is due to be completed at Farewell Spit in about 10 days. A Christchurch mountaineer and tramper, Mike Abbott, began his attempt in December from Tautapere on the Southland coast On Saturday, Mr Abbott collected a food drop left for him at the Owen River Hotel, near Murchison, before walking up Owen Valley at the start of the north-west Nelson section of the traverse.
The traverse has involved crossing 69 passes and 31 crossings of the Main Divide. Mr Abbott will traverse Mount Owen before walking along Wangapeka and Karamea valleys to Cobb Valley before continuing to Golden Bay. A north-south traverse of the Alps begun in Nelson in January by two Christchurch men was abandoned at Lewis Pass. Messrs Anthony Kane and Carl Smith planned to take 3>4 months; keeping mainly to the eastern side of the Main Divide.
