Air Force to commemorate 1956 crash
PA Wellington A wreath commemorating the death of an Air Force squadron commander, his crew and passengers in Malaysia in 1956 will be laid by an R.N.Z.A.F. Iroquois helicopter, an Air Force spokeswoman says. The wreath will be laid by a helicopter from No. 141 Flight during a final navigation exercise over SouthEast Asia, Flying Officer Diana Hales said yesterday. Squadron Leader Stuart Tie, his crew and passengers, were killed when an R.N.Z.A.F. Bristol Freighter crashed in bad weather during a supply drop in the Cameron Highlands, north-east of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Squadron Leader Tie was apppointed commanding officer of R.N.Z.A.F. No. 41 Squadron, less than six weeks before the fatal flight. “Laying” the wreath will be one of the last events No. 141 Flight, the R.N.Z.A.F.’s last flying unit in South-East Asia, will undertake before being disbanded. Its 43 servicemen and three Iroquois will return to New Zealand. For No. 141 Flight crews, based at Singapore’s Air Force Base Sembawang, the navigation training exercise will be a chance to say farewell to the Malaysians and Singaporeans they have worked with. All three helicopters, crews, servicing teams and a photographer will be in the exercise. From April 17 to 22, they will travel to areas on the Malaysian Peninsula of significance to the R.N.Z.A.F.
Presentations on behalf of the R.N.Z.A.F. will be made at the Royal Malaysian Air Force Base Kuantan, Sybang and Butterworth and to units at Ipoh, Simpang and Penang. The exercise will also include a visit to the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, to the Malaysian Special Forces Training Camp at Surgei Udan and to Terendak Camp, a former New Zealand Infantry base. No. 141 Flight R.N.Z.A.F. is the last active remnant of the Air Force’s South-East Asia Transport Squadron, No. 41 Squadron. It served in South-East Asia during the Malayan Emergency (1948-60) and the Malaysian Confrontation with Indonesia (1963-66). The unit will be disbanded in less than four months.
