Lighting precautions taken

PA Auckland Lighting control at the Avondale racetrack in Auckland has been spread over five switches instead of one in a bid to ensure another blackout doesn’t occur. An inquiry into last Friday’s light failure revealed that the single switch for the lights was activated, plunging the course into darkness. Now the lights have been divided into five separate banks so all the lights can’t go out at the flick of one switch. The club says all five switches will also be under a key-lock system to make them inaccessible. The key will be kept in a safe place until after the last race. As yet there is no evidence to show how the switch was triggered on Friday. On Monday evening the club invited a stipendiary steward, Noel McCutcheon, and jockeys to the course to see the new system. Grant Cooksley was the only jockey to take up the invitation and he left the course satisfied a repeat of Friday’s blackout would not happen.
