Top field for circuit event

The final of the Guthrej Travel novice horse circuit has attracted 26 entries and the Ashburton combination of Julie Srhoy and Mr Quinn are favourites to win after excellent performances at the previous two trials. A talented young combination, Anna Damiano and Maia have also been performing well and could challenge the favourites. As always the Cottage Saddlery open pony trial will be hotly contested and with Annabelle McCrostie and Amanda Brown, both members of the Canterbury-West-land Pony Club team included, this class has a ven’ strong field. Riccarton racecourse is the venue for the Canterbury horse trial groups one day trial on Ahzac Day. Record entries of 127 have been received. The field for the Trust Bank Canterbury open horse has only five entries at present. This competition for the Holmeslee Cup is wide open this year. The winners for the last five years, Jane Cullen and Awatuna, are currently based in Levin. Strong competition should be provided by Sheree Gallagher and Janone, from Rangiora, and Paul Sharp and Astra, from Dunedin. These riders are currently lying fourth and sixth on the Hobsons Horsebox accumulator which concludes at the national three day even at Taupo in May. Two types of competition that are becoming increasingly popular are eventing and combined training. To compete in these competitions you and your pony.do not necessarily need to be an expert in any one field of horsemanship, but you both must be very fit and proficient at a variety of exercises. The important point in both types of event, is that the same pony performs all the phases, so you require a pony that is a good all-rounder. At the recent annual General Meeting of the N.Z.H.S. Canterbury Area Dressage Group, the following officers were elected. Chairperson, Mrs J. Hill; secretary-publicity officer, Mrs P. Cameron; treasurer, Mrs K. Boon. Sally FieldDodgson’s Zorba won the annual points prize, and a new award, donated by Lucy Sandford (a sash for the breeder of the winning horse) was presented to Jill Husband. The Canterbury-Westland pony area held their annual meeting recently. Officers elected were: Chairperson, Mrs J. Buriy; secretary, Mrs H. McCormick; treasurer, Mrs A. Peyer; publicity officer, Mrs P.
