Democrat give; to National politician

PA Auckland The former leader of the Democratic Party and member of Parliament for Pakuranga, Mr Neil Morrison, has given money to the National Party politician who beat him, Mr Maurice Williamson. Mr Morrison sent a cheque to Opposition coffers in his old electorate, in spite of savage remarks in the past about the free-market ideology Mr Williamson supports. “Democracy costs money,” Mr Morrison said, adding that his donation was a token. Acknowledging that he had in the past attacked free-market politics, Mr Morrison said he had “moved a little towards the market” in his new job. For the last few months Mr Morrison has been bagging and delivering sweets to West Auckland shops. Mr Morrison, who quit

the Democratic Party earlier in the year saying he was sick of its bickering, said he believed a mixed economy was best for New Zealand. He also wanted to back people he felt could help the country: “I realise I’m not there, so it is no use me beating my gums in the wilderness.”
