An area of harmony
The Parkroyal is an important component in the Victoria Square redevelopment scheme. The hotel complements the adjoining Christchurch Town Hall, and is in harmony with other surrounding buildings; the Salvation Army and Law Courts. Victoria Square’s floral clock has been completely renovated. The surrounds have also been enhanced by an outdoor amphitheatre for public performances, along with other
landscaping. The Parkroyal is of Lshaped design, with two wings of accommodation fanning from an axis which follows the now partially closed Victoria Street. An important consideration for architects, Warren and Mahoney, was to complement the Town Hall without overshadowing it, achieved by “pulling away" the hotel’s bulk, with its higher sides facing out from the
square, To assist this concept, each floor was made smaller than the one below. A glass-covered Atrium has been created between the wings, with the public area below enjoying an indoor/outdoor effect. From the public podium, glassed lifts rise above the atrium through glass-enclosed tubes to provide scenic views of Victoria Square and the central city.
