Controversial exit

The Waikato light middleweight, Andy Creary, bowed out of the prestigious King’s Cup boxing tournament in Bangkok yesterday, but the New Zealand coach, John McKay, was angry at the manner of his exit. Creary, New Zealand’s sole remaining representative after first round defeats for Jason Eade, Johnny Wallace and Michael Bell, lost the quarter-final bout to his Pakistan opponent by a single punch. The points decision went the Pakistani boxer’s way after the five computers, used in the tournament to decide the winners of the bouts, ruled that Creary had thrown one punch less than his opponent, so the decision went against him. “McKay was convinced Creary had won the fight,” said the New Zealand Boxing Council chairman, Brian Tobin, yesterday.—PA
