War graves to be inspected

The Director-General of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Sir Arthur Hockaday, will be in Christchurch today as part of a five-day visit to - New Zealand. covers more than 23,000 burial places in 140 countries. More than 3000 war graves in New Zealand are cared for through the - Internal Affairs Department. The Secretary for Internal Affairs, Mr Peter Boag, said it was intended to have war graves in New Zealand improved to the commission’s standard by the end of the year. A special grave maintenance programme began last year. Graves in Christchurch were the first to be refurbished.
