Youths hurt in bike crash

Two youths were hurt, one seriously, when their motor-cycle collided with two cars at a Beckenham intersection last evening. One of the youths, aged about 16, was to be admitted to hospital with serious leg fractures. His passenger, aged 14, suffered minor leg injuries. Their names were unavailable. A Ministry of Transport spokesman said the motor-cycle apparently swerved to avoid a car, but hit it and was hit by another car following. The accident happened about 8.40 p.m. in slippery ’ conditions at the corner of Tennyson Street and Southampton Street. It was one of five injury and 12 non-injury accidents reported to the Ministry of Transport between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. yesterday. Traffic Sergeant Les McKay said drivers had not adjusted to the wet weather. “Drivers should watch their following distances. That seems to have been the main cause,” he said. Motor-cyclists had also had trouble with wind gusts.
