School trustees
Sir,—Parents whose first child begins school next year appear not to have the right to vote for the school’s board of trustees.
This means a three-year waiting period, or more than half the child’s primary education, before they can exercise that right. There must be many parents who find themselves in this situation. Could someone please explain why we were forgotten?— Yours, etc. R. BRYANT. March 31, 1989.
[The Regional Superintendent of Education, Ms Noelene A. Macdonald, replies: “All parents of children currently attending school are eligible to vote for the parent representatives on boards of trustees. This is a change from previous school committee elections where their members were elected by householders in the district. Parents whose first child begins school after the election are eligible to be co-opted members of the board. Once their child attends school they will be able to stand for any position created by a casual vacancy. Parents of pre-school children have not been forgotten. During their child’s 12 or so years at school they will have at least four other opportunities to participate in elections of trustees.”]
