In brief

Overdue hunter safe The search for a Christchurch deer hunter overdue in the Lake Sumner area was called off before it started yesterday. The Waikari-Hawarden search and rescue team was being assembled when the hunter, Mr Dale Eridge, walked out. He had been expected home on Sunday evening. Victims named The police have released the names of two Christchurch men killed in separate motor accidents on Sunday. They were: Steven Paul Dempsey, aged 22, and Pieter Landsmeer, aged 56. Mr Dempsey was killed instantly when his motor-cycle collided head-on with a north-bound vehicle near Woodend at 1.15 a.m. Mr Landsmeer was thrown from his utility vehicle when it rolled over in the Weka Pass, about 3km from Waikari, at 3.15 p.m. He died at the scene soon after. He was the only person in the vehicle. Elderly ‘not armed’ Elderly people are frightened and angry about the danger of being attacked in their homes but, unlike one Auckland superannuitant, they are not arming themselves, an Age Concern welfare officer, Mr Joe Tate says. The superannuitant, who called herself June, told the radio station IZB she kept a loaded pistol in her home and would use it on anyone who broke into her house. She had been hurt twice in her home by intruders. The next time, after giving a warning, she would shoot the intruder and roll the body on to the road, she said. — PA. Man shot in face A Shannon man was shot in the face by a bullet which ricocheted after hitting a deer while he was hiding in the Tararua ranges at the week-end, the police said. Sergeant Stewart Davies of Levin said Ra Waho was one of three men hunting in bush behind Shannon, on Saturday. Another hunter shot a deer with a high-calibre rifle and did not see Mr Waho approaching from the other side. The bullet went through the deer, ricocheted and hit Mr Waho, who was 80m away from the deer. Mr Waho was taken to Palmerston North Hospital where his condition yesterday was described as serious but stable. — PA. P.O. robbed of $3OOO About $3OOO was stolen when an armed man held up the Ahuriri post office in Napier yesterday morning, the police said. Although the offender was chased from the scene by a member of the public, he had not yet been found by the police. — PA. Pigeons confiscated Acclimatisation Society rangers confiscated a vehicle, two guns and five plucked native pigeons on Sunday in a crackdown on poaching in the Katikati area. Two meji will be prosecuted. The society secretary, Mr Vic Ormond, said yesterday the operation was mounted by the society using 'four rangers, as a prelude to the shooting season. Native pigeons were becoming fewer. — PA. Name released The name of the Japanese woman killed in a car accident at Mount Cook last week has been released. She was: Mayumi Kawamoto, aged 25, of Osaka. She had been living in Auckland since November. The police had withheld her name until next of kin were traced in Japan.
