More arrests likely in cocaine mop-up
Further arrests are likely in the wake of the huge cocaine haul in Westport at the week-end. Three men have been arrested — in Westport, Christchurch and Queenstown — after the biggest cocaine seizing in the South Island. The cocaine, with a potential street value of $1 million, was found after a three-month joint police/customs effort involving up to 40 officers.

Queenstown man yesterday and said more arrests were likely as the campaign was mopped up. A Queenstown tourist operator, aged 27, was arrested about 1.20 p.m. and charged with conspiring to supply the Class A drug, cocaine.. A Queenstown police spokesman said the man was remanded in custody to today when he would make a High Court application for bail. Detective Senior-Ser-gean^L David Whitford, of
Christchurch, said earlier reports of the haul being valued at $300,000 were conservative.
“It all depends on the purity of the drug. If it is quite high — and we believe it is — it could have a potential street value of $1 million when it is broken down,” he said.
“We don’t know the purity yet, as it is still being broken down. And of course the value depends on the demand.” Court report, l7
