Awapuni

Special correspondent Palmerston North

Charvet, an impressive winner, at Trentham, will clash with the vastly improved Sterling Maid in the 1200‘metre Wanganui Handicap at Waverley to- ■ morrow.

Charvet worked stylishly at Awapuni yesterday morning. Her big autumn mission is the Cuddle Stakes at Trentham next month. But in the meantime she will race at Waverley and then on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Saturday week.

Brian Hibberd will ride Charvet at Waverley. It could develop into a match race between the Awapuni mare and Sterling Maid, winner of her last four. The top weight, Grandstand, is an acceptor for the race as well but trainer, Noel Eales, said that Grandstand is an unlikely runner. Working on the plough, Charvet was never really at top and came to the finish of 800 metres in 525, the last 600 m in 38.45.

Charvet might appreciate more than 1200 m at Waverley yet she could keep Sterling Maid honest. Cuivre will run in the same race but might not run unless there is rain. The horse is very well and yesterday left 800 m behind in 50.45, the last 600 m in 37.45. Cuivre won’t be long winning a race once she strikes easy ground.

Serenade took time honours for 800 m yesterday, running 50s, the last 600 m in 375. She failed on the first day at Manawatu but has had little luck in her racing. She could show up in the Passport Handicap.

Arcado is in that race as well but is another which could be missing unless the ground gets easy. Arcado looks improved by a recent race at Feilding and looked sharp running 1000 m in 1:5.45, the last 600 m, in 38.45. The former Levin galloper should have a good autumn. Wings Of Apollo and Springboard ran home 800 m in 535, the last 600 m in 40s* Springboard is a

Gay Apollo maiden with Noel Eales. Wings Of Apollo had a slight setback last week but has recovered. He should go well in the Sawmills Handicap. Cotton Club, in fine form for the Passport after some bold efforts lately, ran 600 m in 38.55, and did it well. Peter Ayres rides him at Waverley. Zamaliza and Windsor Fortune were timed 1000 m jn I:ss, the last 600 m in 395. Windsor Fortune is a consistent maiden with a winning chance in the Fowler Graduation.

Higheasterjet, engaged in the Juvenile at Waverley, ran from the 600 m easily in 39s and Sister Mary and Golden Elm covered 1000 m in 1:5.65, the last 600 m in 39.55. David Walsh rides Golden Elm in the Waverley Graduation.

Trina Bay was timed 800 m in 535, the last 600 m in 38s. She failed badly on the first day at Manawatu but gets another chance in the Passport Handicap. Speedy Braunfels took 36s for 600 m .. -
