Boost in farmer confidence seen

PA Wellington A near doubling of fertiliser sales in February over the same month last year shows confidence is returning to farming, the Under-Secretary of Agriculture, Mr Maxwell, said yesterday. Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries statistics showed 173,051 tonnes of fertiliser ’ were sold in February compared with 88,081 tonnes last year. Sales were more than 96 per cent higher this year. The statistics suggested farmers had confidence in the future of their industries, Mr Maxwell said. The Opposition said Mr Maxwell could have been spreading some fertiliser of his own in his suggestion of increased farmer confidence.

Its agriculture spokesman, Mr John Falloon, said Mr Maxwell was either showing extraordinary ignorance or was

trying to mislead New Zealanders.

"Farmers bought up big in February because they knew fertiliser prices were due to go up, so they rushed all available stocks,” Mr Falloon said.
