Councillors’ pay up 78%
PA Wellington Wellington City councillors have voted themselves a 78 per cent pay increase which will be backdated a year. The increase, approved by the resources committee on Thursday, is the maximum allowed under recommendations re-
cently announced by the Minister of Local Government, Dr Bassett.
Ordinary councillors will now receive $BOOO a year, an increase of $3500 or 78 per cent. The daily allowance for attending meetings will increase from $7O to $llO. This means councillors
who attend meetings 150 days a year will receive $24,000 a year. Each local authority will decide whether the maximum recommended increases are justified. This follows a Higher Salaries Commission review of allowances for local body heads.
