Petrol policy criticised

PA Wellington Deregulation of the oil industry has failed to create competition and has increased the dominance of the four big oil companies, the Motor Trade Association says.

The association’s trade affairs executive, Mr Duncan McDonald, said the Government’s policy had enabled the big companies to gain control of the retail sector of the industry as well as the wholesale. Mr McDonald said that at the time

deregulation was under consideration the association had supported it, but only on condition the Government moved to restrict ownership of retail outlets by the oil companies. The association believed failure to restrict the retail holdings of big companies would effectively undermine any gains in competition. The Government had ignored the association and now New Zealand was left with an oil industry which was “fully vertically integrated from oil well to petrol pump,” said Mr McDonald.
