Turkish wheat O.K.

Wheat in the Turkish ship Manyas I has been given the all clear by Health Department officials. Tests for radiation in the 20,000 tonne shipment were conducted by the National Radiation Laboratory from 33 samples supplied by the department from the ship’s holds.

Canterbury farmers had expressed fears that the shipment might have been contaminated by fall-out from the Chernobyl disaster.

The department’s health protection manager, Mr Brian Predergast, said all samples had shown negligible radiation.
