Drugs gang arrested

NZPA-AFP Islamabad Pakistani customs authorities have arrested a gang of 11 alleged international narcotics smugglers in Karachi after the seizing of nearly 90kg of hashish in Auckland, customs sources said yesterday. The “organised gang of narcotics smugglers” involved employees of Philippines Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines and Shaheed airport services in Karachi, customs sources were quoted as saying. The customs officials had been

tipped off that smugglers had packed three suitcases with 87kg of hashish and loaded them on to a Philippines Airlines flight for Auckland. The suitcases, sent as unaccompanied baggage, were allowed to reach their destination on March 18 and New Zealand customs and the police drug squad set up an ambush. No-one turned up to collect the baggage.

Pakistani customs have arrested Shamim Haider, a crew assistant working with Philippines Airlines, and 10 others.
