Pensioner flats

Sir,—Sir Hamish Hay has missed the point in his response to my recent letter on pensioner flats rentals, and his claim that the pensioners find the increase acceptable is laughable. Their national superannuation has been increased by about 5 per cent in line with inflation. The Citizens council has increased pensioners’ rentals by 14 per cent. This is outrageous, and the Mayor’s attempt at justification shows that the Citizens councillors have no regard for the welfare of city pensioners. This is confirmed by their policy of fixing rentals at a level “sufficient to enable the Elderly Persons’ Housing Account to be self-supporting,” which completely ignores the pensioners’ ability to pay. Also, if an increase of this size is needed after a similar one last year, then' Citizens administration of pensioner housing leaves a lot to be desired. If Citizens and Sir Hamish cannot do better than this then it is time for a change. — Yours, etc., DENIS O’ROURKE. March 30, 1989.
