Welcome centre proposed

By

SUZANNE KEEN

A Belfast architectural designer has proposed a “Welcome to Christchurch” centre for the north of the city to encourage visitors and revitalise business. Mr Ken Taylor believes his proposal would give the city a favourable image and create jobs. In a paper to the Waimairi District Council he suggested that Christchurch needed to work harder to live up to its “Garden City” image. "Pause to think of the north and south main roads into the city and what do you see — ribbon development, telephone poles, a few isolated attempts at landscaping, motels, industry and so on — nothing to suggest we are what we claim to be,”

he said. Mr Taylor said that a "Welcome Centre” in Belfast could provide information for travellers on directions, locations and activities in Christchurch.

The centre could contain a service station, clearing house for motel and hotel bookings, a fast food outlet, souvenir and gift shop, wine boutique, florist and audio-visual similar to the “New Zealand Experience” in Picton.

Mr Taylor said businesses in the area would benefit from greater custom with the establishment of the centre and could contribute towards its cost. Waimairi will investigate the proposal.
